March 2010 Newsletter

Here I am…..struggling to meet another deadline! I hate to admit it, but my New Year's Resolution was to get more organized! That's exactly why I usually don't make resolutions!

OK! I'm crying "uncle". Alright already with this cold weather! Although, I shouldn't complain…it's still better than Cincinnati weather! But really! This is Florida!!

JANUARY COMMUNITY MEETING

At the January community meeting we discussed "short term" and "long term" goals for our community. In case you missed the meeting, here are some of the items discussed:

SHORT TERM

How to improve communication to TB residents.

Ideas: -Meetings, First Coast Journal, E-mails, call a board member, check the Website (www.treasurebeachflorida.com).

How to have a community appearance that makes us all proud?
How to get all bulkheads to meet county codes?
How to have a more attractive entrance?
How to have a safer community for our residents?
How to protect and keep our beach walkway safe?

LONG TERM

Getting the canals dredged

In order to know what the priorities are to the entire community, we need to hear from you. Call us, e-mail us, write a letter. If we don't hear from you…..the priorities will be set by the residents that come to the community meetings. Is that what you want? All of the board members e-mail addresses are listed in the First Coast Journal OR are listed on our website. We want to hear from all of you!

Thefts from autos in Treasure Beach

It appears the perpetrator may have been caught! Let's hope we see far fewer break-ins to vehicles than in the past. The best thing to do is not to leave any valuables in your vehicle. Don't hesitate to call the St. John's County Sheriff's Dept. if you have a break in OR if you see suspicious activity.

TREASURE BEACH RESIDENTS APPRECIATION DAY!!

WHEN: April 17, 2010 WHAT TIME?: 1:00
WHERE: Butler Park West

Charlie Novak offered to plan the annual picnic this year but he needs some volunteers. Please call Charlie at 471-1579 to help out.

Treasure Beach will provide the hot dogs, hamburgers and the necessary buns, plus drinks and condiments.

We need everyone who attends to bring a covered dish to share. (That's my favorite part……..all the different dishes!) AND, don't forget to bring your chairs, family, friends, grandkids, etc.

If you have some outdoor games, bring them too.

This picnic is for ALL residents; renters and owners. It's a great time to get to know other people in Treasure Beach.

TWO SCAMS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION:

CENSUS SCAM

The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning to be alert for possible scams in the name of census taking this year. Currently, census workers are verifying only two address items: How many people live in your household; and how many are adults. You are not required to answer any other questions at this time. Subsequently, census takers will visit to ask about names, age, gender, race and other relevant data. BE AWARE THAT:

  1. Every census taker will have a badge, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see these items before answering questions.

  2. No matter what is shown you, DO NOT give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information. Of course, DO NOT invite them into your house.

  3. Eventually, census takers may contact you by phone or mail. They will not contact you by email. So do not open any attachments purporting to be from the Census Bureau.

JURY SCAM!

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud.

LANDSCAPERS

If you live in Treasure Beach and own a landscaping company…..we need to talk!! Please call Paula at 461-4356 to learn details!

NEW RESTAURANT IN TREASURE BEACH!

We were all sad to see the Palms Grill close. I especially enjoyed "breakfast at the Palms." (That had a nice ring to it!)

The good news is that Treasure Beach is getting a new restaurant!

Welcome Stephen Fine Foods!

Stephen Fine Foods will serve good home style cooking for breakfast and lunch. Items such as: Meatloaf w/Datil Tomato Chutney, Fried Chicken or Steak, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Cornbread and much, much more!

Look for Stephen's to open the last week in February!

EVERYONE IS ASKING!

How many people have paid their dues so far???? Well, the answer is 142 property owners have paid their annual dues on time. YEAH! That means about 278 of you are still in the Holiday stupor! WAKE UP! It's a new year! We need ALL property owners to pay their dues by the end of February. As I mentioned above….TBPOA has short term and long term goals that we need to meet.

We received many nice comments from residents when they paid their dues and The Board really appreciates the support!

We realize a lot of our residents have had a very bad time economically. We pray that next year will be better for everyone!

SPEAKERS FOR FUTURE COMMUNITY MEETINGS

February 9th, 2010 – Paula Murphy – Insurance questions and answers

March 16th, 2010 – Lauren Accurso – Lauren owns "Cre8 the beauty of order" and is going to talk to us about "un-cluttering and organizing" our homes. WOW! Just in time for spring cleaning!

April 13th, 2010 – Dr. Monahan of Monahan Chiropractic will address our aches and pains!

I'm working on pinning down the speakers for May 11th and June 8th and will keep you advised.

BOARD MEMBER CHANGES

Erika Whitley has resigned from her position as Vice President of the TB board. Rose Larsen has agreed to accept this VP position until the end of this current term. So…..get ready for October, 2010 when we will need nominations to run for board positions for the year 2011.

Many thanks to Gisela Prange and Wally Richter for the refreshments that are served after our board meetings. I'm sure they would appreciate a break once in awhile so please contact Gisela ("the organizer") and let her know if you are willing to help out!

Until next time………………………….

Paula Murphy, President
