November 2012 Newsletter

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

It’s that time again when family and friends get together to celebrate Thanksgiving.   I read an article about the first Thanksgiving and it turns out they may not have even had turkey, or sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie!

The first recorded religious Day of Thanksgiving was held in 1623 in response to a providential rainfall.

The religious day of thanksgiving and the harvest festival evolved into a single event: a yearly Thanksgiving, proclaimed by individual governors for a Thursday in November.

The custom of an annual Thanksgiving celebrating abundance and family spread across America.  Some presidents proclaimed Thanksgivings, others did not.  Abraham Lincoln began the tradition of an annual national Thanksgiving in 1863.

Thanksgiving is an enduring symbol from which millions of immigrants have learned "Americanism."  While not all Native Peoples celebrate the day, the story of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag sharing a harvest celebration remains an inspiration to many.

SAD NEWS

We are very sorry to have to tell you that we lost a good friend and board member this month due to cancer.  Barbara Warman was our Treasurer for four years and did an exemplary job.  Barbara was also very instrumental in getting the annual dues letter out to our property owners with the help of Gisela and Freddie Prange.

Barbara will be greatly missed and we wish to extend our deepest sympathy to her husband Mike Warman and to their family and friends.

NOVEMBER 13TH, 2012  - VOTING FOR OFFICERS – POT LUCK

There’s not much of a surprise here! The officers for the TBPOA board for the year 2013 are as follows:

Paula Murphy – President Irv Stockdale – 1st VP     Sharon McIlhenney – 2nd VP
Charlie Novak – Treasurer     Richard Grubb -  Recording Secretary

Unless there are any surprise volunteers at the November meeting…..the above people will be the 2013 Treasure Beach Board.

CHANGES COMING IN THE YEAR 2013

As you can see by the names running for the board in 2013…..change is going to be necessary if we are to have a board at all.  For the last 5 years….it has pretty much been the same people volunteering for the board.

Starting in 2013 there will only be one Community Meeting held during the year.  The date will be announced in the near future.

There will be a major change in the way we communicate with our owners/residents.  There will no longer be monthly articles in the First Coast Journal from the President.  TBPOA will rely solely on our website to communicate information.  There are very positive aspects to this new change.  The details have not been completely worked out, but they will be announced in the December (and last issue) of The President’s Dock.

And, don’t forget our “nextdoor neighbor” web site.

Respectfully submitted:

TBPOA PICNIC 6/9/2012

Well….the picnic was a success!  Thunderstorms threatened us, but they went away right around 11:00 a.m. so the picnic committee went to work setting things up.  By noon the die hard picnickers started showing up and the committee started cooking!  As usual, there were great side dishes to share and great desserts!  Even some new faces!   It’s such a great opportunity to meet new people in TB.

Our guest speakers talked about invasive plants in our area and had suggestions as to how to get rid of them.  Two big offenders are the Brazilian Pepper tree and the Mexican Petunias.  Wouldn’t you know it….the only things I can grow are on the invasive plant list!  I have given up on tomatoes!

We did have food left over, however.  So guess what we’re having at the Sept. 11th meeting?????  Hamburgers and Hot Dogs!  Don’t worry…the meat that was not cooked has been frozen!!!  We also have chips and soft drinks.  You can still bring your own dinner, if you want to OR just bring a side dish to share.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 – NOMINATION OF OFFICERS

POT LUCK – 6:30 …………MEETING AT 7:30  BEACHER’S LODGE

We hope to see a lot of people at this meeting.  It is a VERY IMPORTANT meeting to nominate officers for 2012.  I will not be putting my name in the bag this year so please, please give thought about serving on our TBPOA Board of Directors.

There are two big elections in November…..TBPOA Officers and the election for a new President of the United States of America. (I’m not putting my name in for that job either!).

CANAL COMMITTEE

The canal committee sent out letters about a month ago and we have received some mailed responses and some phone calls.  We need to hear from ALL of you. This is a community effort.  If you don’t take the time to send back your letter (with or without money…..in favor or not in favor), you may not be happy with the final decisions. We need to know how many people are in favor of dredging and how many are not.  WE PREFER TO HAVE THE RESPONSE SHEET FROM YOU FOR OUR RECORDS.  We included a self-addressed stamped envelope.  There were also addresses listed for you to drop off your response, if you prefer.

If you DID NOT receive a letter, or know someone who did not…let me know and a letter will be sent to you.

NEW CANAL MARKER PLACED

John Gobler of Maritime Construction placed a PVC marker to indicate the North side of the channel exiting Treasure Beach.  John Delaney had a PVC pole that he wasn’t using so John Gobler put it to good use!  If you need a bulkhead installed or repaired, you might want to contact John Gobler at Maritime Construction, P. O. Box 2014, Flagler Beach, Fl 32136-2014. Phone# 904-860-1185.  Website:  MaritimeConstructionInc.com

TB will ask a member of the canal committee to place the appropriate symbol on this pole.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL

Did you know we have a personal trainer that lives in Treasure Beach?  (So much for my excuse for not exercising!)  Shawna Cochran lives on Treasure Beach Blvd and offers many different exercise classes for all ages.  She can be reached at 904-540-4524.  If we could get enough men and women together we might be able to form our own exercise classes for TB residents!

TREASURE BEACH NEXTDOOR WEBSITE

If you haven’t signed into the above web site you need to give it a try.  You can meet new people, stay in touch with ones you don’t see often and post items to sell, etc. on this website!

You can also tell residents if you sew, bake, or have items to sell.

This site is ONLY FOR TREASURE BEACH RESIDENTS. When you register with your e-mail address you will be prompted to put in your e-mail address every time you sign on.

You can post as much or as little information on your blog as you choose.

Also…we have some neighbors that have needs due to health issues.  If you live near someone that needs help getting to the store, etc., please help them out or let me know and I may be able to contact someone on their street that can help them.

Thanks for your support of Treasure Beach!!!

June 2012 Newsletter

DATES TO REMEMBER

June 2, 2012 – TBPOA picnic – Butler Park EAST 12:00 to 3:00

ALERT:     THE PICNIC IS AT BUTLER PARKEAST!!!!!!!!!!

The County said we had “West” but they made a mistake in the Reservation!!!!!!!!!

TBPOA will provide the hotdogs, hamburgers, sodas, plates, utensils and hopefully some entertainment. (We need to find some electricity!)  There will be lottery tickets and gift certificates.  DON’T FORGET TO BRING A COVERED DISH TO SHARE!

We will have a guest speaker at the picnic who is the Coastal Training Specialist and a member of the Invasive Plant Task Force at GTM Research Reserve.

This is always a fun time and a great way to meet new people in TB!  Bring friends and relatives!  Children welcomed!   Bring some chairs too! We needed them last year. (What a great problem to have!)

No meetings July and August

September 11, 2012 – Pot Luck 6:30 – Beacher’s Lodge

- Nomination of officers for the 2013 term.

November 13, 2012 – Pot Luck 6:30 – Beacher’s Lodge

- Voting for officers nominated in September!!!

December 8, 2012 – TBPOA Christmas Party – Beacher’s Lodge 6:00 P.M.

When the information about the Christmas Party comes out you must respond as soon as possible.  Last year we didn’t have enough people to justify paying for the room at Beacher’s.  We had to move the party to a private residence and were limited on space.

CANAL COMMITTEE

By now, every owner of property in TB should have received a letter notifying them of the new canal committee that has been formed. I hope you took the time to give your thoughts and ideas.  Without input from owners, the committee will not be able to make a sound decision.

BEACH WALKWAY

YEAH!!!! The walkway to the beach is finished and looks even better than the first one!  We’re sorry if anyone was inconvenienced.  We didn't know the EXACT date the walkway would be closed.  We had to work around the contractor’s schedule.  There will be a gate installed in the near future with new signs attached.

Please be courteous and don’t make un-necessary noise as you pass over this area.  Also, remember there is NO skateboarding or skate boards allowed or riding a bike over the walkway.   (You may walk you bike over the walkway.)

When all of the work is completed, we will be installing a new gate.

NEXTDOOR TREASURE BEACH

We have opened a new media for Treasure Beachresidents to stay in touch with either other.  It’s like a “facebook” account for Treasure BeachResidents only.

You can use this website to let people know if you own a business, if you are a seamstress, bake specialty cakes, etc., etc., etc.!!!!

Here’s how to get on:  https://treasurebeach.nextdoor.com

You can also advertise your business (for free!) on our Treasure Beach website: www.treasurebeachflorida.com.  Just e-mail me at: paula@tbpoa.com and I’ll have someone contact you.

SEE YOU AT THE PICNIC!

Treasure Beach Breakfast Bunch

Photo taken by Eleanor Loseke

Did you know that we have Treasure Beach Breakfast Bunch meets the third Tuesday of every month at Stephen's Fine Food Restaurant at 8:00 a.m? As submitted by Eleanor Loseke, the group at first used to be all women, but lately some of the men have joined us...and it used to be only Treasure Beach residents, but lately Memorial Lutheran Church members have joined us. The food is great and we enjoy each other's company...lots to talk about. Newcomers, come join us!!! For more info, please call Irma at 904-471-0594.

Change has come to Stephen's Fine Foods. During the early part of March, Stephen's closed to make some changes and reopened as a Mexican Restaurant. I believe the good news is that they will still be doing breakfast!

Be sure to come to TBPOA's April meeting for a wonderful "pot luck" dinner. We have some wonderful cooks in our little neighborhood. Save the date of Saturday, June 2nd to attend our annual picnic at Butler Park West. More information will follow in the coming month.

Also, we have started a new website called Nextdoor Treasure Beach. It will be different from Treasurebeachflorida.com. Nextdoor Treasure Beach is a private community website (sign in necessary) and will give us a chance to get to know our neighbors better, share local recommendations and advice, Lend, borrow and give away, keep our neighborhood safe, and stay informed. Come to our meeting in April and find out more!

February 2012 Newsletter

The Board of TBPOA hopes everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Most of us have stress that we struggle with daily. Financial issues, health issues, children issues and business issues. Stress can be very hard on your body. It helps to accept that we have very little control over our own life…..much less anyone else’s life. I say the Serenity Prayer often, but only recently did it finally sink into my brain!

Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
The courage to change the things I can.
And the wisdom to know the difference.

It was that last line that took me awhile to understand! DUH! I am the only person that I can change!!!! We can’t change other people no matter how much we try!

INTRODUCING THE TBPOA BOARD FOR 2012

President - Paula Murphy
1st V. P. - Irwin (Doc) Hall
2nd V. P. - Sharon McIlhenney
Recording Secretary - Richard Grubb
Treasurer - Charlie Novak

I would like to thank everyone who agreed to be on the board for 2012!

ATTENTION: MEETING DATES HAVE CHANGED

At least for the year 2012, we are only going to hold quarterly meetings. However…..every meeting will be a “pot luck”!! We usually get a great turnout at “pot luck” dinners and I love to taste other people’s cooking!

Here are the new dates: MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE SIGNS AT THE ENTRANCE IN CASE THE DATES HAD TO BE CHANGED DUE TO AN EMERGENCY!!

Tuesday: April 10, 2012 – 6:30 pm POT LUCK DINNER

Tuesday: May…community picnic…date to be announced.

NO MEETINGS JULY AND AUGUST

Tuesday: September 11, 2012 – 6:30 pm POT LUCK DINNER
And NOMINATION OF OFFICERS

Tuesday: November 13, 2012 – 6:30 pm POT LUCK DINNER
And ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2013

Saturday: December 8, 2012 – TBPOA CHRISTMAS PARTY!!!
Scheduled at Beacher’s Lodge – 6:00 pm

Thanks to everyone who has already paid their dues for 2012! In the event of a hurricane or tornado, residents of TBPOA may be required to show proof of residency to enter the community. If you live out of town….it would be handy to have your TBPOA membership card in your pocket! (Since your driver’s license will possibly show an out of state address.)

We accept the annual dues all year long!!!!!

I DON’T WANT TO MAKE MONEY – I JUST LOVE TREASURE BEACH!!!

TBPOA board is a volunteer board. I have received several calls from an owner who was surprised that I “work out of my home”. I told the person “I’ve asked for an office, a salary and a small paid staff….but they just laughed at me!”

My point being….we need every resident’s help identifying situations in TB that need to be addressed. We’re not trying to be the TB Police. Our goal is just to make TB a nice place to live. When prospective buyers drive through TB we want them to see a nicely kept residential area where people take pride in their yard and home. This helps everyone’s property values.

A NEW CHURCH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Grace Point Baptist Church is now in the mall at the entrance to TB. It’s nice to have a church so close to give people the opportunity to walk to church or not have to drive so far to get to church. I hope people will take advantage of this convenience.

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

The summer picnic is a great time to meet new TB residents. However, the picnic is too far away. Why not make an effort now to know some of the people on your street!

If you know your neighbor is ill or elderly….see what you can do to help. Maybe just taking in their trash cans is a help for them. Maybe cutting their grass while you are cutting yours would be a nice gesture of friendship.

It’s the right thing to do……..
