EX Century 21 Yellow Bldg on 6505 A1A

     New Business

Doing a search I ran into your Treasure Beach Blog.  My name is Manny and my wife is Kelly.  We have been living in St Augustine for 30 some years , my wife as an Occupational  Therapist  and  I did real estate for years . We bought the Century 21 Bldg. and have been wondering what to do with it. Finally we realized that the Kangaroo sore had closed so we are opening a limited convenience store and some fresh take out food to start.  We would appreciate if you give our E Mail address to the Treasure Beach residents so they can suggest what articles  they would like us to carry and we will try and accommodate them. Since this will be some kind of neighborhood store . Hope to meet all the Treasure Beach residents .   Question ? Are we in Treasure Beach we would like to join the association and pay the yearly fee.

Thanks for your time  Manny and Kelly .   mannyg@aug.com

Media Release

MEDIA RELEASE

*Corrected Release*

19 March 2010

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is hosting their first "Operation-Medicine Cabinet" this Saturday. This is a Pharmaceutical Take Back program, a prescription for safe kids and a clean environment.

When old medications are kept in your house it increases the chance for illegal use and theft. But the question remains on how to get rid of expired or old medication? You don't want to flush them, because that would send them into our water system which could contaminate our water supply as well as our drinking water.

Disposing of your unused or expired prescriptions and medications properly is extremely important. So bring your unwanted or unneeded medications to this free collection event and they will be disposed of free of charge. Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place this Saturday, 20 March, 2010 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the front parking lot of the Ponce de Leon Mall, 2121 U.S. 1 South.

Please bring the medications in their original container and that container will be returned. Items that will not be accepted are Sharps, Medical Wastes or thermometers.

For additional information please contact Deputy Diana Bryant, Crime Prevention at the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office at (904) 810-6694.

Treasure Beach Wins and Events

Due to the lag time between publishing and writing, the court case over our almost famous walkway will have come and gone. As I write this month, other battles have been won for Treasure Beach. Some small, but victories all the same. To say " knowledge is power" would be a direct shot at some of the enemies this past year. Treasure Beach has some won some battles, so I hope there is more good news next month. Did you see the new web page for Treasure Beach? I think it's awesome, and my biggest congrats on its success. I don't know how hard it was to get that domain name, but the results are very impressive! Just this past month there are new reports showing that people are watching the internet more and more, and turning off the TVs we loved and all grew up with. Funny because after about a good 60+ year run, it seems that TV is just not cutting it anymore. I dare say the future for TV programming needs to pickup the pace or get left behind soon.

In the past few months we all saw the Palms Grille close down. This month we have a new breakfast place called " Stephen's Fine Foods in its place. Just seeing the old restaurant open is a relief! Another win for Treasure Beach! Now if we can get that old store open near the South entrance things will be back to normal. Several homes sold on Ventura Rd this past month in only days, so that has some good issues too. I don't like to see a vacant home on the street, so it was a win! On a personal win, I've purchased my first web server and plan to have my own hosting domain, soon. I will say this about the future for the internet. Its changing in ways we can't see yet, but, yes folks, that thing we called " the net" is still going through evolution. In the past you had to almost be wealthy to afford your own web server, but prices are falling, and people are starting to run their web sites from home computers. To explain this in simple terms, instead of renting web space from large network communication companies, home owners are now starting to run their own small personal servers on the internet. In the short term I'm concern over how we'll adapt this new business for public privacy. I do see some troubles over this new "do it yourself" web services, but I'm sure it's the future and in the name of progress. Another win this month that went by most of us, is our local resident, Jodie. This dog walking local had throat cancer and he has been going through treatments. Jodie tells me the cancer has been beaten this month and so this marks another win for a local we all see walking his dog each day. A big congrats to Jodie and we hope to continue to see him, and that big dog out there enjoying his walks. On another up for Treasure Beach this month, a few old single wides have left forever this month, now all we can do is hope to see the lots get nice new homes shortly. I do not have any information about the now empty lots, so we'll have to sit and hold on this just yet. Another item on the real estate came this month too. A few homes that were offered for sale have raised their asking prices. Wow, this is interesting and could be the signal we've hit bottom prices around here, and things are turning around soon.

On a sour note this past month, my neighbor Jeff drove his boat over to the public launch ramp, and lost his pickup truck to the water. Jeff explained that he asked someone at the ramp to assist him in getting his boat on the trailer. At some point backing the trailer into the water the fellow was unable to stop the truck and jumped out. The Dodge 4x4 drove itself down into the water until only the roof was showing. Poor Jeff was in shock when I next spoke with him, shaking his head all he could do was say, " I loved that old truck ". Like a family member had passed away, poor Jeff will miss the old road beast. Due to the full dip in the river the truck is what we call a write off apparently so the old Dodge will not be coming home. Our sympathy goes out to Jeff and his old Dodge this month. It's our hope that Jeff will find a new Dodge soon. So, let this be a warning to all that launch their boat at the public ramp! Make sure you know who's driving your truck, and trailer down that ramp. Due to the cold weather this past two months, I've lost small palm trees and grass, so it's going to be a good spring day for some gardening supplier this year. Yes, records broke for January and Febuary so we'll all see each other I'm sure running out for new plants and trees this spring. Yard sales were down all over the island due to the cold weather too, so perhaps we'll see a big surge once all this cold weather moves out. Let's all just say, soon enough it will be a hot day in Treasure Beach! See ya there!

Treasure Beach News

Dear Neighbors:

Welcome to Stephen's Fine Foods at the entrance to Treasure Beach. Stephen's (formerly Palms Grille) opened the last week of February. Stephen's serves breakfast and lunch specials from Monday to Friday. We enjoyed our first experience at breakfast and will return to try one of Stephen's lunch specials. For those of us who remember the old Pomars in Crescent Beach (and it wasn't that long ago that it closed in 2009), it has recently been renovated as Paula's Beachside Cafe. We stopped in for breakfast on Sunday, March 7 but so far they are only offering a limited menu. Our waiter told us that a grand opening is being planned for some time in April so stay tuned....

Get well wishes and fond regards go out this month to Nancy, one of our neighbors on Villa Verda.

For me, it was no surprise to hear that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and that there would be six more weeks of winter. And shortly after that fateful event, a winter storm blew up the East Coast leaving a "deep" blanket of new snow. From the Carolinas to New England, breaking records everywhere (global warming?) We finally did have a few nice sunny days in the mid-60's towards the end of February. One of our seasonal visitors from Vermont commented that she was finally getting the weather she had paid for.

If you are ever looking for a dog or cat, I would highly recommend adopting a rescue animal. There are so many loving animals longing for someone to love and if you can adopt, you will find that the pet was not the beneficiary of your generosity and kindness, but you of theirs. We lost a very special friend, Buddy, a German Shepherd mix that we rescued in 2003. Sadly we had to put him to sleep in December. I vowed (as others have done) to never get another pet. But then, we found a very nice dog from Goliath and Bebe's world.. They are at Petco's on Saturday (cats) and Sundays (dogs) with lovable, adoptable pets. Our newest addition to the family is a husky mix, about 2 to 2 1/2 years old named "Lucky". Adopted on Valentine's Day, Lucky is getting quite use to his new environment. He loves to go walking and we have been to the beach several times. Are you aware that our walkway to the beach is named for "C. E. Hunt"? The question of the month is, "How did the walkway get named?" I would love to know more about C. E. Hunt, and the history of the walkway which I will incorporate into our newsletter. Please contact me at mcilhenj@bellsouth.net or at 904-461-3397.

As Treasure Beach residents (owners and renters alike) we are very fortunate to have an easement and a walkway to the beach. The walkway is only made possible through the upkeep and maintenance of our Treasure Beach volunteers. So each time you use the walkway to the beach, remember that it wasn't built without a lot of volunteer sweat and hard work, and it's something we shouldn't take for granted.

Back to walking around the neighborhood, some of Lucky's newest acquaintances include Priscilla, the boxer; Maggie, the bloodhound; Max, the black lab; and Boo, the cockapoo. We have even ventured all the way down to the end of Treasure Beach Road to visit Fell's park. I enjoyed sitting on one of the benches there while viewing boats going up and down the Matanzas. Lucky just wanted to sniff!

In case you missed this interesting article in the St. Augustine Record on Monday, March 1, 2010, I thought it is worth repeating. This article was written by Anthony DeMatteo as a Special Report to the Record.

Cold? Blame El Nino - The chill could extend into May

St. Augustine residents can expect lower-than-normal temperatures over the next three months, according to a meteorologist at the National Weather Service at Jacksonville.

"There is a pretty good chance of below-normal temperatures continuing for March, April and May," Meteorologist Scott Carroll said Sunday.

Today, locals leave behind a cold first two months of the year. "Since Jan. 1, St. Augustine has had 18 freezes and eight high temperatures lower than 50 degrees," Carroll said.

Carroll said the chilly start to 2010 is due to a combination of a persistent, upper-level pressure trough and the region's El Nino pattern this year. He said a "better-than-even" chance of greater-than-normal rainfall and lower temperatures through May are mostly symptoms of El Nino. El Nino patterns include unusually warm waters east of the Pacific Ocean increasing low-latitude storms in the East. "It prevents us from warming up as much as we would," Carroll said. "Temperatures and rainfall in June are given equal chances of being greater or less than normal annual levels," Carroll said.

Carroll said that although the next three months are likely to bring lower temperatures than in a typical Northeast Florida year, consistent cold is finished until next winter. "The good thing is that it has got to be warmer," Carroll said. "It's not as though we're going to be below normal temperatures every day in this three-month period. But when you average it out, temperatures should be lower overall."

2010 ---- a chilly start

  • St. Augustine had 18 freezes in the first two months

  • Eight high temperatures were lower than 50 degrees

  • Lowest 2010 high: 42 degrees on Jan. 9

  • Lowest 2010 temperature: 26 degrees on Jan. 6, Jan. 10 and Jan. 11

  • First day of Spring: March 20

depressing to be in a place like that when you want to be home and well

Things Your Burglar Won't Tell You!

Read the entire thing including the suggested solution after #21.
Things Your Burglar Won't Tell You:

1.  Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.
5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.
7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable . But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather...
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)
10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.
13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system.. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at
faketv.com <http://faketv. com/ <http://faketv.%20com/> > .)
14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
15. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
16. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.
17.. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
18. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.
20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.
21. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door.. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Protection for you and your home

If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you.  (I guess I can get rid of the baseball bat.)

Wasp Spray

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection.  She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you..  The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection.. . Thought this was interesting and might be of use..

Wasp And Hornet Spray

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at  Sylvania Southview High School .  For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray.  The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says, "spray the culprit in the eyes".  It's a tip he's given to students for decades. It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray.

"That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out."

Maybe even save a life.
Please share this with all the people in your life.

Bert Dobbertin celebrates 86th BIrthday!

Special congratulations to one of our Treasure Beach neighbors who lives on Pizarro Road and who celebrated his 86th Birthday in January. Bert Dobbertin pictured in the birthday hat is very active and walks his family dog" Tillie" twice a day. Bert is also the Chaplin of the local VFW on U S I in St Augustine. The celebration was enjoyed by his children and friends at his son (Bud) and Bud's wife (Marie) at their home here in Treasure Beach.

Reported by
Charlie and Taunnie Novak

A few of our neighbors gathered for lunch this month at Joe and Betty Fell's. I love to hear all of the early stories of Treasure Beach. I know that some of you are already going through your old picture and newspaper files so that we can share some of the history of Treasure Beach. We had a great lunch, good conversation and look forward to getting time together again. Thank you Betty and Joe Fell for your hospitality this month.

Speaking of learning about St. Augustine history, The local 450th Commemorative Commission, in partnership with Flagler College, the city of St. Augustine, St. Johns County Tourist Development Council and The St. Augustine Record, have been hosting a series of program free at Flagler College Auditorium since November. So far we have learned more about "Peoples before Ponce de Leon," "First America: Colonial St. Augustine," "Pirates! Fact and Fiction," "The British are Coming," "The Great Southern Cracker Roadshow." If you have missed any of these wonderful programs, there are still two left. One on Tuesday, April 13 - "Palaces in Paradise: Flagler's Age of Opulence," and the last one on Tuesday, May 18 - "Road to Freedom: African-Americans in Florida."

Also, come and listen to the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine during their Heritage Series: Legends of Lore of the St. Johns River about naturalist, William Bartram, Hubbard Hart, and Mary Emily Boyd. This presentation starts at 7:30 p.m. at the San Marco Theater (across from Ripley's Believe It or Not) 28 San Marco Avenue, St. Augustine, FL. The cost is $8 per person.  Call the theater to make sure you reserve your seat.

The following thought was submitted by one of our neighbors.

This is a Motto To Live By:

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, latte in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride"

Alcohol Compliance

MEDIA RELEASE

1 March 2010

On Saturday, 27 February, the Youth Services Unit of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office conducted another alcohol compliance detail as a continuing aspect of the "Party's Over" campaign. As part of the Sheriff's Office Investigative Aide Program, a 18-year old male attempted to purchase alcohol at 13 local establishments in the St. Augustine area. The Aide was served alcohol at 3 of the businesses. The operation is funded by a SARG Grant and falls under the PACT Prevention Coalition.

The aide would produce his actual identification if asked and state his true age if requested. The Sheriff's Office filed a charge of selling/serving or giving alcohol to a person under the age of 21 on the three subjects who served alcohol to the Aide. The reports will also be sent to the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco for potential administrative investigations.

The establishments where clerks were charged with selling alcohol to a minor were:

Kangaroo Express, 715 S.R. 207, charges signed on a 49-year old female clerk for selling the Investigative Aide a six pack of beer.

Appleby's, 225 S.R. 312, charges signed on a 25-year old female bartender who served the Aide a bottle of beer.

Gypsy Cab, 828 Anastasia Blvd., charges signed on a 23-year old male bartender who served the Aide a bottle of beer.

In all three of these cases the suspects checked the operatives ID, but still served to him.

Clerks at the following businesses refused to sell alcohol to the Investigative Aide: St. George Tavern, 116 St. George St.; Mi Casa Café, 69 St. George St.; The Liquor Store, 16 Castillo Dr.; White Lion Restaurant and Pub, 20 Cuna St.; Acapulco Mexican Restaurant, 12 Avenida Menendez; Meehan's on Matanzas, 20 Avenida Menendez; The Tradewinds, 124 Charlotte St.; A1A Aleworks, 1 King St.; The British Pub, 213 Anastasia Blvd.; and the Outback Steakhouse, 245 S.R. 312.

March 2010 Newsletter

Here I am…..struggling to meet another deadline! I hate to admit it, but my New Year's Resolution was to get more organized! That's exactly why I usually don't make resolutions!

OK! I'm crying "uncle". Alright already with this cold weather! Although, I shouldn't complain…it's still better than Cincinnati weather! But really! This is Florida!!

JANUARY COMMUNITY MEETING

At the January community meeting we discussed "short term" and "long term" goals for our community. In case you missed the meeting, here are some of the items discussed:

SHORT TERM

How to improve communication to TB residents.

Ideas: -Meetings, First Coast Journal, E-mails, call a board member, check the Website (www.treasurebeachflorida.com).

How to have a community appearance that makes us all proud?
How to get all bulkheads to meet county codes?
How to have a more attractive entrance?
How to have a safer community for our residents?
How to protect and keep our beach walkway safe?

LONG TERM

Getting the canals dredged

In order to know what the priorities are to the entire community, we need to hear from you. Call us, e-mail us, write a letter. If we don't hear from you…..the priorities will be set by the residents that come to the community meetings. Is that what you want? All of the board members e-mail addresses are listed in the First Coast Journal OR are listed on our website. We want to hear from all of you!

Thefts from autos in Treasure Beach

It appears the perpetrator may have been caught! Let's hope we see far fewer break-ins to vehicles than in the past. The best thing to do is not to leave any valuables in your vehicle. Don't hesitate to call the St. John's County Sheriff's Dept. if you have a break in OR if you see suspicious activity.

TREASURE BEACH RESIDENTS APPRECIATION DAY!!

WHEN: April 17, 2010 WHAT TIME?: 1:00

Charlie Novak offered to plan the annual picnic this year but he needs some volunteers. Please call Charlie at 471-1579 to help out.

If you have some outdoor games, bring them too.

This picnic is for ALL residents; renters and owners. It's a great time to get to know other people in Treasure Beach.

TWO SCAMS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION:

CENSUS SCAM

The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning to be alert for possible scams in the name of census taking this year. Currently, census workers are verifying only two address items: How many people live in your household; and how many are adults. You are not required to answer any other questions at this time. Subsequently, census takers will visit to ask about names, age, gender, race and other relevant data. BE AWARE THAT:

  1. Every census taker will have a badge, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see these items before answering questions.

  2. No matter what is shown you, DO NOT give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information. Of course, DO NOT invite them into your house.

  3. Eventually, census takers may contact you by phone or mail. They will not contact you by email. So do not open any attachments purporting to be from the Census Bureau.

JURY SCAM!

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud.

LANDSCAPERS

We were all sad to see the Palms Grill close. I especially enjoyed "breakfast at the Palms." (That had a nice ring to it!)

The good news is that Treasure Beach is getting a new restaurant!

Welcome Stephen Fine Foods!

Stephen Fine Foods will serve good home style cooking for breakfast and lunch. Items such as: Meatloaf w/Datil Tomato Chutney, Fried Chicken or Steak, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Cornbread and much, much more!

Look for Stephen's to open the last week in February!

EVERYONE IS ASKING!

How many people have paid their dues so far???? Well, the answer is 142 property owners have paid their annual dues on time. YEAH! That means about 278 of you are still in the Holiday stupor! WAKE UP! It's a new year! We need ALL property owners to pay their dues by the end of February. As I mentioned above….TBPOA has short term and long term goals that we need to meet.

We received many nice comments from residents when they paid their dues and The Board really appreciates the support!

We realize a lot of our residents have had a very bad time economically. We pray that next year will be better for everyone!

SPEAKERS FOR FUTURE COMMUNITY MEETINGS

February 9th, 2010 – Paula Murphy – Insurance questions and answers

March 16th, 2010 – Lauren Accurso – Lauren owns "Cre8 the beauty of order" and is going to talk to us about "un-cluttering and organizing" our homes. WOW! Just in time for spring cleaning!

April 13th, 2010 – Dr. Monahan of Monahan Chiropractic will address our aches and pains!

I'm working on pinning down the speakers for May 11th and June 8th and will keep you advised.

BOARD MEMBER CHANGES

Erika Whitley has resigned from her position as Vice President of the TB board. Rose Larsen has agreed to accept this VP position until the end of this current term. So…..get ready for October, 2010 when we will need nominations to run for board positions for the year 2011.

Many thanks to Gisela Prange and Wally Richter for the refreshments that are served after our board meetings. I'm sure they would appreciate a break once in awhile so please contact Gisela ("the organizer") and let her know if you are willing to help out!

Until next time………………………….

Paula Murphy, President
