Canals drying up

Two adjacent communities on Anastasia Island that border the Intracoastal Waterway are finding their canal connections drying up.

Both Treasure Beach and Matanzas Cut are built on canals intended to provide direct passage from docks to the Intracoastal. But their canals need dredging to bring the water line higher than the current 2.5 feet it reaches at high tide.

Residents with small flat boats can still make way to the Intracoastal. Larger boats scrape the bottom.

Treasure Beach Homeowners Property Association president Charlie Novak said their canal system is owned by St. Johns County, and the association expects the county to pay for the dredging.

Mike Rubin, county director of construction, said the county took ownership of the canal about 11 years ago when it paid to dredge a 30-foot-wide channel in the 7.5 mile canal. He said homeowners knew it was a one-time deal. Homeowners were also aware that it was likely the canal would eventually need more dredging, Rubin said.

When residents requested the dredging 11 years ago, the county discovered that a developer owned the canal, Rubin said. The county is not allowed to build projects on private property, so it bought the canal for a small fee from the developer.

Residents feel the county is bound by an ordinance that says it will maintain the waterway. The property owners pay higher taxes to support canal maintenance.

The Treasure Beach Homewner's Association is circulating a petition to the St. Johns County Commission about the issue.

Commissioner Ben Rich, whose district includes the Treasure Beach area, said Friday he had not heard of the petition and did not know about the problem.

The petition also demands enforcement of an ordinance concerning bulkheads.

"At low tide, the ends of most canals, currently, are completely dry and the center of the main canals have only one to two feet of water," the petition states.

Novak said more than half of the Treasure Beach homeowners have already signed the petition.

Matanzas Cut is a newer and smaller community than Treasure Beach, and the homeowners association owns its canal, which is 900 feet long and 80 feet wide.

Tom Odendahl, president of the Matanzas Cut Homeowners Association, is one of those affected. Odendahl recently sold his 28-foot cabin cruiser since it was impossible for him to maneuver it through the canal to the Intracoastal entry.

Odendahl and other board members are about to begin the bidding process for the dredging. The cost will be presented to association members for consideration of a special assessment at its January 2007 meeting.

From the President's Dock, August 2006

Our Street and Front Entrance Beautification Chairperson Nancy Gaj has been busy. She has been relentlessly complaining to our cable company to come and remove their dead brush left hanging from cable wires on Costanero Road. It is a real eyesore. Keep it up on them Nancy!!!

If you saw a woman cutting grass at the front entrance last month, it was our Treasurer Peggy Berrier. The area was getting a little shabby and she decided to do something about it. Peggy you are great!!!!! And Thank You. Your efforts are really appreciated.

Have you noticed the four (4) Pedestrian Signs placed up on A1A for the beach walk crossing?

Well, I think that this just may be the beginning of being noticed by the State/ County Roads people. Thanks to Lou and Nancy Gaj for attending the Traffic Safety Council meetings and representing Treasure Beach. I think it made a difference. I would really like to have the State place a traffic light at A1A and Treasure Beach Road before 2007 (End of my term). I am told that the cost would run anywhere from $ 50,000 to $150,000 to install plus 1,500/yr for maintenance. Well that's why we all pay taxes.

I want to acknowledge and thank the following- to Bill and Marion Libby for their time and talent in painting the school bench at Costanero and Treasure Beach. They did a wonderful job like last year. It's a shame the bench no longer exists. We have had a lot of vandalism this summer but many wonderful people in our neighborhood are quietly making improvements.

Our Neighborhood Watch our Chairperson Doug Berndt resides on Costanero Road and his phone number is 461-6943. Doug's email address is: BERNDTD@BELLSOUTH.NET. If you have situations or concerns please direct your inquiries to him.

I will assist Doug at the on-set however he will be guiding the ship. He will be building his file of email for notification so I may have to send out the request for volunteers for the last period of this year (September thru December). Please volunteer early. Pick a week and just volunteer. We need your help.

I wanted to thank our Seychelles partners for the new and bright light at the beach walkway entrance however before I could get it in print vandals broke it.

I receive many phone calls from our neighbors with problems. One sticks in my mind. The lady was extremely distraught. Her dog had been hit by a man in a pick up truck pulling a trailer and exceeding the posted speed limit. The lady went to the house of the driver of the pick up to tell him he hit her dog and to ask him to slow down because she has two young children. It could have been one of them. Words ensued -no resolution- no apology.

Now for my side of the story - I personally witnessed the same person driving too fast in our neighborhood just a few days ago.

So Please Slow Down and by all means try to be a kind person. Be a neighbor. Show a little compassion.

Respectfully,

Charlie Novak

Crescent Beach Paint Out starts Thursday

Beautiful things are about to be created on Anastasia Island.

Starting Thursday more than 30 artists will set up their easels at scenic or "interesting" spots throughout the island for four days of plein air painting. Plein air is the French term for "in the open."

The artists, from throughout Florida, will paint outdoors with the subject directly in view to capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject.

This is the second year for the Crescent Beach Paint Out. And, it won't be restricted to Crescent Beach.

On Saturday, artists will paint in designated locations including Fort Matanzas Park and Lighthouse Park where the public may observe them. More than 90 works in oil, watercolor and pastel are expected to be created.

If you're looking for original island art, stop by Island Fine Art, 6279 A1A South, one-half mile north of the 206 bridge. The public is invited to visit the gallery to view and purchase works as they are completed each day.

A reception and awards ceremony will be held Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. Works will be on display and for sale through Sept. 30.

To view last year's paintings and a list of this year's participating artists visit www.islandfineart.com or for more information, call 471-5808.

The St. Augustine Beach Civic Association will host a Meet the Candidates forum at 7 p.m. today at St. Augustine Beach City Hall. Candidates for St. Johns County Commission District 2 and city of St. Augustine Beach District 4 in the Sept. 5 primary election have been invited to present their views. The format will include opening statements, questions from the audience and closing statements. Light refreshments will be served. City hall is at 2200 A1A South. Call 347-8007 for information.

Treasure Beach Property Owners will hold their first beach party starting at 5 p.m. Saturday on the beach at the end of their walkway. Food, games, contests, prizes, souvenirs, stories and entertainment by the Treasure Beach kazoo band are planned. Party goers should bring a picnic supper and beach chairs. For information, call the association president, Charlie Novak, at 471-1579.

Linda and Lester Wiggins, providers of the produce at the Wednesday Farmers Market, are taking a vacation.

"For three weeks, starting Aug. 23, we'll be putting in our fall crops," Linda said.

Although the produce stand will be a "no show" during that time, other food and crafts stands will be open at the St. Augustine Beach pier park market. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to noon. The Wiggins, of New Smyrna Beach, plan to return on Sept. 13, "as long as there are no hurricanes," Linda said, recalling the growing delays and produce availability after last year's hurricanes. The St. Augustine Beach Civic Association sponsors the Farmers Market.

Entries are being taken for the Endless Summer 10K Cross Country Run scheduled for Sept. 16, starting at 7:30 a.m. The 6.2-mile scenic run takes place at Anastasia State Park. It starts with a beach loop, traces pavement, dirt roads and soil through the east nature trail and hammock loop. Participants must be fit to run or walk on soft sand, uneven terrain, mixed pavement, and hills with sun exposure, heat and humidity. For the less hardy, there will also be a one-mile fun run.

You can download the registration form at www.endlesssummerrun.org, or call Carrie Browder at the race hot line 461-0074.

Last Tuesday's National Night Out celebration, sponsored by the St. Augustine Beach Police Department in conjunction with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, attracted more than 500 people to the pier park pavilion.

St. Augustine Beach Police Chief Richard Hedges said the response of local businesses and the community was overwhelming.

Hedges thanked the Oasis and the Sunset Grille restaurants for providing hamburgers, hotdogs and ribs, merchants who contributed prizes and local organizations that set up booths with information and give-aways.

"Next year, we'll have a bigger and better celebration," Hedges said.

Many Thanks to Beachwalk Volunteers

A very big Thank You to Treasure Beach volunteers who replaced approximately 50 planks of our beach walkway on April 29th from 9:30 thru 11:30 a.m. Volunteers who helped include Bill Libby, Tom Griffin, Ray Robert, Jim O'Connell, Joe Pelliteer, Charlie Novak, Jim Berrier, and Ron Larson. A pickup truck used to properly dispose of planks was furnished by Doug Berndt.

Our beach walkway located directly across Highway A1A from the Treasure Beach entrance adds immeasurably to an outstanding life style enjoyed by residents. With canals for boating, beautiful marsh views and easy access to the beach the Treasure Beach lifestyle is much to be envied. Many sincere thanks to those who helped with this important maintenance project.

A future project date for a date in June will soon be announced. It is hoped that Treasure Beach residents will continue to lend their support to this important ongoing project. Thank you all very much.

Jim Berrier

Walkway Maintenance Coordinator

Beach Walkway Work Party Set

A work party is scheduled for Saturday July 15,2006 at 7:30 A.M. We would like to beat the heat and humidity. We have a few volunteers but need at least 5 or 6 more. Plans are to remove and replace 40 to 80 boards depending on how many volunteers show up.

Bring your hammer, pry-bar and] drills with a square head bit. We are using 3.5 inch Stainless Screws. We could use the generator that Joe Pelliter owns and if that comes true we would need extension cords and maybe and electric saw also.

Doug Berndt has offered to take the old wood to the county dump .

If you have questions about volunteering for this 3 to 4 hour project call Jim Berrier at 461-7853 or Charlie Novak at 471-1579

From the President's Dock

Well this month has been pretty darn hot and dry. So far our area has been spared the brush fires. Stay away Mr. Hurricane...

I hope that your lives are going well and your health is holding up.

Sorry that many of you missed our general meeting June 5th. We had a pleasant surprise bestowed upon our group of 30 who attended. Napoli's owner (Mike) sent over about 6 or 7 pizza pies and garlic cheese bread with marinara sauce for dipping. He also sent us plenty of cold drinks to go along. Added to Taunnie's goodies with coffee, we had a feast!! The food was excellent as usual from Napoli's. To Mike- we truly thank you for your generosity and appreciate your kindness.

At our meeting we addressed many topics like the canal petition, the beach walkway repair and security in our neighborhood. Additionally, we had our regular Florida State Lottery give away and our successful raffle promoted by George Pascucci began. We netted $ 306.00.

The grand prizewinner of $ 100.00 was Wally Richter and Evelyn Delaney won second place for $ 75.00. Congratulations to the winners!!!

To all those who did not win I thank you for your support. As a side note Evelyn turned around and sent a check to our Treasurer for $ 75.00. Thank you Evelyn for your generosity.

Today is Friday June 9th. I called Flagler Hospital to get Louie Gaj's room number so I could visit however I was told that he was discharged at 3:00 P.M. I called him at home. Louie was happy to be home. The doctors told him not to lift anything heavy for a while. He's got to be careful with his "Ticker". Glad you're home Louie.

On another note, we are in need of replacement street captains for Salado and Pueblo Roads. Sometimes we must distribute letters, bulletins or petitions (like the one for the canals) to the community quickly. This is where we look to our street captains for help.

Please consider a position of street captain and give me a call at 471-1579. Your help is needed now.

Please come out and support your community activities. We had a very nice turn out at the Volunteer Appreciation picnic held at Butler Park West last month. We always have the Lunch Bunch folks who attend a different restaurant each month. If you are new to the area you may want to try the Lunch Bunch. You may enjoy yourself and lunches are always inexpensive. This is a good way to find your favorite restaurant in and around your community.

Coming up in a few weeks (Saturday June 24th) is the St Augustine Boat excursion that leaves the city docks at 8:30 P.M. I doubt that you will see this article before the event occurs. If you have an e-mail address registered with us you were told about this tour.

It should be very nice and relaxing cruise about 1 hour fifteen minutes or so. Adults $ 7.50 Children $ 3.50.

We then have our bowling party set for Saturday July 8th at Noon at Anastasia Bowling on A1A. Last year's event was enjoyed by all. That's why this is our second annual party.

The cost is like $ 6.00 per person that includes two hours of bowling and includes shoe rental. They have inexpensive hot dogs, burgers and soda pop. So come and enjoy quality time with your neighbors, friends, children and grandchildren.

Then we have our August 12th Beach Party that everyone will enjoy- It won't cost you anything to enjoy your part of the beach with friends and family. Our chairperson has some fun things planned.

I hope to see you at the coming events. Don't stay at home. Enjoy life.

Sincerely,

Charlie Novak

Neighborhood Notes by Evelyn: Picnics, Picnics, Picnics

The Volunteer Picnic coordinated by Peggy Berrier, Sherrie Hall, and Sheila Martin was a great success. It was a great social, as the food was varied and delicious, the fellowship with neighbors and friends was fabulous, and the turnout was the largest we've ever had. The weather also cooperated. If you missed this event, you missed a great time.

The Memorial Day picnic at the St. Augustine Health & Rehab was another fun event. It was held on the front premises under large shade trees. Residents and families enjoyed the beautiful weather, the cool breeze, the hamburgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, watermelon, etc.

The Scimitars held their yearly picnic at the Shrine Club. It was held indoors so we did not have to fight the ants, flies, and insects that also enjoy picnics. All of the food was made by the ladies of the Shriners, who are all super cooks. Retired Educator friends and WWII Submarine friends (also Shriners) attended the picnic.

CONGRATULATIONS:

June is the ANNIVERSARY month. George & Bobbie Cleveland celebrated their 50th anniversary, and John & Dot Delaney celebrated their 36th anniversary by going on a cruise. Jim & Peggy Berrier will be celebrating Peggy's mother & father's 60th anniversary. Congratulations to all couples in Treasure Beach who had June anniversaries.

June is also RETIREMENT party time. JOHN HUME had a great retirement party at his Salado Road home, and was also honored by the St. Johns County School Board for his twenty-seven (27) years of teaching in our school system. DICK JOSLIN (our Santa Claus on Treasure Beach Road) was also honored by the St. Johns County School Board for his eleven (11.3) years

of driving a school bus. Congratulations to all who retired this month, and who will wonder when they ever had the time to work.......as hobby and volunteer activites keep them busy 24 hours a day!

The summer is also VACATION time, although I don't know why people who live in Paradise (another name for Treasure Beach) need to go away for a vacation. However, Ron & Sherrie Hall had a great time in Hawaii. The Joslins traveled up North to celebrate their great-grandchild's first birthday, and visited other relatives in the Northeast. Cruises are a popular pastime, and Bill Jepson is biking in Colorado! Such energy!

MEETINGS:

The June Treasure Beach meeting was attended by about twenty-five members. President Charlie has lots of social activities lined during the summer months----Boat Tour, Bowling, Beach party, Lunch Bunch. Come join the fun with your neighbors. During the break we enjoyed Napoli's pizza, and other goodies (which had all the calories removed). The winners of the Raffle were Wally Richter ($100), and Evelyn Delaney ($75). The raffle added $381 to our treasury. Thank you for supporting Treasure Beach with our raffles, and activities.

The winners of the Lottery tickets were Jim Berrier, Bill Chalmers, Marion Libby, Taunnie Novak, and Phyllis Abbot. Our next meeting will be in September.

The St. Johns Retired Educators awarded six scholarships to local students. Assistant Superintendent Martha Mickler was the guest speaker. They also honored Anna Wheeler, the 5th grade essay contest winner who won the Unit Award and the District V Award.

Any retired educator is welcome to attend and join our local Unit. Our next meeting is September 22nd. If you are interested, please call Evelyn.

BRAGGING:

Steve and Phyllis Abbott (Majorca Road) are excited about their first grandson, Andrew John Abbott, born on April 3, 2006, weighing in at 7 lbs, 3 oz. He was 19 inches long. His parents are Harold & Mara Abbott, son & dtr-in-law of Steve & Phyllis.

Jim & Peggy Berrier (Rio Royale) recently attended their younger son's U.S. Army Airborne graduation at Ft. Benning, GA. Scott is now stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft.Bragg, NC. Their other son, Aaron, is currently serving with his Jacksonville, Florida based United States Navy Reserve Unit in Kuwait.

Bill & Peggy Chalmers have nineteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. It is difficult keeping up on the whereabouts of the grandchildren as several of them are making their careers in the Air Force. Grandson Jason Chalmers (Air Force) left Illinois in June for Korea. Granddaughter Melissa Chalmers (Air Force) left Maryland in June for Korea. Bill & Dawn Chalmers (Air Force) live in Arizona, and just had a new baby, Jackson, who joins his two brothers. Donald & Katie Chalmers (Air Force) spent a year in Korea, came back to the States in January, and left for Germany in February. They have Cody, and a new son named Joseph.

Shawn Delaney (John IV) left Shaw AFB, SC, in June] to spend a year in Korea. Maybe the Chalmers and Shawn will meet in Korea. Maybe they already know each other, as Shawn keeps running into his friends as he is transferred from Base to Base.

New residents Truett & Maritza Yarbrough have three sons and a daughter. Two of their older boys are serving in the military. Danny is in Oregon serving with the Coast Guard, and David will be going back to Iraq for a third tour of duty with the U.S. Army in August.

We are all PROUD of our sons and grandsons who are in harm's way so that we may remain a free country. Please keep all the servicemen in your prayers for their safe return home.

Treasure Beach is a unique community. The residents are interesting, friendly, retired, still working, owners, renters, etc. We want to know you better, so please keep me informed of any interesting events in your daily lives.

Love & Hugs,

Evelyn,

The President's Dock March 2006

Hi Neighbors,

I hope life is treating you well or fairly well or just living and breathing. We had a nice response to our Beach walk Chairman's request for help. Jim Berrier will tell you about that in his article. Today is Wednesday and it was Lunch Bunch day. For those of you who missed the lunch today - Well, you missed some good food at Mango Mango's. I think that Rose Larsen does a great job planning the next place to dine. Thank You Rose.

By the way, my bride and me think of the lunch bunch as in wine tasting. We get to sample the cuisine of the many local restaurants in our area and have fun with the neighbors who attend. Rose has set it up that someone always walks away with a free lunch courtesy of her employer.

When I took office I made a things to do list .On this list is a goal to attempt to get a cross walk painted on the highway of A1A to get to beach walk way or a sign of some sort warning motorists of pedestrians. The best I could dream of would be a traffic light at Treasure Beach and A1A. On March 14, 2006 there is a meeting with the St. Johns County Safety Traffic Team at the Emergency Operations Center. I plan to attend to begin my quest for added safety for our neighbors who cross the street to get to the beach. Maybe we could have the traffic light operational during Bike Week and Snowbird season. If you are one who opposes this action then meet me there and argue against my request.

I believe that we have witnessed some favorable rapport with our Seychelles residents and will continue to keep an open dialogue. It is nice to feel that we both have a common cause that binds us together. I will strive to keep our relationship well and alive.

While on this subject, I received an email from one of the Seychelles Officers today concerning the walkway. I know the complaint is factual because I witnessed it today myself. While working with Ray Roberts replacing a handrail we ran into a man who was feeding the birds on the beach. He said he lived in Treasure Beach on Desoto Road . Returning to our vehicle parked on A1A, Ray and I noticed a trail of dry pet food all the way from the beach to the street. I guess this man was not aware of what had happened. I don't think he would have done this on purpose. But, the fact remains- there have been reports of rats and mice( live and dead) found on the Seychelles properties recently. It was expressed to me that a trail of dog food will only add fuel to their fire ( problem). So I am hoping that this gentleman reads this article and takes heed to a simple request. Please keep the food from spilling onto the walkway. I know that I would not want this to happen to me.

We have our liability insurance with Herbie Wiles Insurance Agency all worked out and are protected for another year.

As a reminder, we do have a special guest speaker for our April 3rd meeting at the Beachers Lodge. So please come and see what the person has to say. It's all about our county's hurricane evacuation plan and how it affects us here in Treasure Beach.

You will not want to miss it.

In this months newspaper you will come across a list of Opportunities. Take a close look at it .See what may tickle your fancy ( there is a lot to chose from) and maybe you just might want to become a part of something fun. Don't be bashful or timid there are a lot of nice folks who work on the committees listed enjoy a sense of accomplishment and maybe even laugh a little. You may just happen to make a new friend along the way. Come on, give back to your community and enjoy the good feeling when the job is done.

If each person in Treasure Beach just gave maybe an hour of their time for a couple weeks per year , the assignment (opportunity) would be accomplished and you would have enjoyed being part of it. Do you need a ride for a committee meeting? - just say so and arrangements can be made. Do you need a ride to the meetings? Just tell me.

I will end on this note and say good bye for another month.''

Respectfully,

Charlie Novak

Treasure Beach Neighborhood Watch, March 2006

Hello everyone,

I am happy to announce that we had several reports from our volunteer watch people about traffic violations with speeding and pocket bikes and loud mufflers in addition to vehicles driving with no license and consequently no auto insurance in the past several weeks. I applaud their efforts to keep our community safe and I stand firm and support their reportings.

If any one witnesses a traffic violation or has a problem with excessively loud vehicles, please report it to the police department or let me know and I will try to get the problem addressed by our sheriffs office- that also goes for drivers running the stop signs and miniature motor bikes speeding through the neighborhood - Both are illegal.

You must be prepared to name the street and address, the approximate time and date(s) and what you perceive to be the violation and if this is a traffic violation + the license plate number. Anything else you can recall would help as well.

The same goes with properties that appear to be in violation of the county codes. If you don't know what the codes spell out just call me and I will talk with you about it. I would like to restate the county code for sitting out a refrigerator or freezer for trash collection. First, you must call the county offices and request pick-up. Next, and most important- YOU MUST REMOVE THE DOOR from the appliance to keep children from locking themselves inside and suffocating. YOU ARE LIABLE both criminally and open to Civil suits.

This neighborhood is a very nice place to live. There are changes happening here for the good of all of us. Our property values have risen to the delight of us all. Let's try to keep it safe for our families. Why not try and to keep our places neat and clean.

Very soon now I will be coming to you for a volunteer week of neighborhood watch. It will cover 4 months from April through July. Please consider helping out by taking a week. We have gone with only three weeks unprotected for the past 130 weeks. It is very important to keep our vigilance to deter crime of any sort in Treasure Beach. Please consider taking a week when I come to you.

Sincerely,

Charlie Novak

Treasure Beach Property Owners Web Site

As information, to those of you who prefer the web site. Our neighbor and good volunteer who has directed our web site will be leaving this position. Keith Colvin has increased duties with his job and needs some quality time with his wife Martha and their children. We would like to personally thank Keith for his past service to our community.

You set up this site and got us running. For that, we are certainly thankful.

We have found a new director, Rusty Yates, (our neighbor) who is willing to tackle this assignment. Keith will arrange to get together with Rusty to create a seamless transfer of work. After that, Doug Martin and I will meet with Rusty to iron out the fine details of what we want to do with this site.

Sorry to see you go Keith. Welcome aboard Rusty and we thank you both.

Respectfully Submitted,

Charlie Novak

Join The Beach Walkway Work Party

A new date has been set for the work party to replace approximately 30 to 40 boards for the walk and replace an 18-foot section of handrail that has been decaying. The date of Saturday February 4th was cancelled account of the inclement weather. For those who showed up we thank you so very much. Please come back.!!

We will be using screws so please bring your portable drills (charged up) and hammers. Joe Pelletier may be bringing a generator if it is available. Also, we will need a hand saw if Joe cannot come up with the generator because we must cut the corners of the hand rail to be installed. Someone might want to bring a portable electric saw if they have one available.

For those who do not want to lay boards down. We need volunteers to shovel out the sand from the bottom of the steps at the beach. The sand needs to be removed to keep the wood from rotting. Your pry bars and gloves will help get this job done quickly.]

New Date:

We do need your help so please come to the front entrance on Saturday February25, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. A rain date of Sunday February 26th has been set and the time @1:30 P.M. (not 10 a.m.) if necessary.

If there are any questions please contact Jim Berrier at 461-7853 or Charlie Novak at 471-1579.

One last thing, we are hoping that each one of us might take the old wood pieces back their house for hiding in their trashcans for Advance Trash Removal to take. Advanced currently does not take building materials. (Maybe 3 or 3 boards each person unless somebody has a better idea.)

Neighborhood Watch Report

Hello everyone, I just wanted to brief you on the happenings regarding our neighborhood watch here in Treasure Beach. I am happy to report that we have filled our vacancies for the time period from January 1 st thru April 29 th of 2006..Thatmsm the first 4 months of this year which means that we will only have to go through two more volunteer recruiting sessions before this year is over so there is still time to show your concern for Treasure Beach by volunteering a week of your time to patrol our streets. I will begin my request for help again probably some time the middle of April.

Recently our emergency cell phone for the neighborhood watch volunteers died. The phone was ready "to kick the bucket" - it had seen itms better times.. After making a telephone call to Sgt. Ricky Domingo in the Sheriffms office we received a new cell phone which is now back in the hands of our volunteer watch patrol. I can only thsnk Ricky for his help once again. This community owes much to Sgt. Ricky Domingoms efforts in the past as well.

I would like to welcome two of our newest volunteer members to the Neighborhood Watch- George Collins and Stephen & Phyllis Abbott who will be doing the watch for their first time. Of course, I would like to mention the names of our fine neighbors who have volunteered in the past few months - Lou Gai, Bill and Marion Libby, Peggy Berrier, Joe Fell, Doug Berndt, Ron and Michelle Harvey and Doug and Sheila Martin. Also, Bobbie Cleveland and Rick Kresge]who useto volunteer all the timebut have either sold or in the process of selling their home.I apologize to anyone whose name I may have not acknowledged. After all I am 65 years old now and my memory may not be as sharp as it once was.

There is an issue for which our committee will be addressing very soon and that is the fire-destroyed trailer located on Barco Road. Mr. Acosta of St. Johns County Code Enforcement will be contacted to have the owner of this trailer either promptly rebuild or promptly remove. This housing unit is a safety hazard and a vermin attraction. It is also an leyesoren in this community. I believe, if my mind serves me, that this trailer burnt down in the spring/summer of 2005. Time has past giving the owner time to get this straightened out but it appears that he/she has abandoned this unit and is willing to just let it stand there. If the owner reads this and would like to talk to me I would be happy to listen so I can find out his intentions. My phone is (471-1579).

Respectfully Submitted,

Charlie Novak

From the President's Dock...

Hello Neighbors,

This is my first report from the post of President - TBPOA. I am honored (and I think- crazy) to take this position. Attempting to fill the shoes of the many folks who have held this post during the past 35-year history of Treasure Beach is certainly a challenge; however, I see it as an opportunity to increase our association membership in both time and talent. With a greater membership we can expect a larger treasury for a possible future battle with our county leaders about the canals. We also need additional volunteers to support the front entrance decoration/beautification project, our TBPOA Welcome Wagon committee needs a hand. Of course, we]will need helping hands with the Treasure Beach yard sale planned for May of this year and one in the Fall. We also need volunteers for our (your) neighborhood watch and help with an Appreciation Picnic for all volunteers this Spring. Can you donate baked goods for our bake sale? I do hope you will consider coming out this year to help us out with these projects because itms all about you.

We all can look forward to fun times ahead this year, as a group, with put-put golf, bowling, our community yard sales, covered dish suppers and possibly a group boat trip. With the help of our very capable Board of Directors and your in-put we can continue the above and even add more to this list 2006. Activities like these help make our community a desirable and pleasant place to call home.

Our own Doug Martin had a special style of leadership over the past two years. He has brought our treasury to a higher level and maintained cohesiveness among the TBPOA Board of Directors as well as our community members. I hope I can be an integral part of the continued growth and prosperity of Treasure Beach as well. I fear not because the Lord will help guide me to do the right thing.]Also, Doug promised he would be there to help lift me up when I tripped.

There will be 9 community meetings in the year 2006. It would really be nice to see more of you all at our meetings to come. We will attempt to get some interesting speakers to join us so we can all learn a bit more about our St. Augustine as well as ourselves- From History to Health to Wealth and Happiness. It is my hope we can keep your interest. We already have 2 speakers lined up for February( our Lighthouse) and March ( Hurricane emergency management ) . April will concentrate on our canal issues and May will see our meeting at Whitney Laboratories in Marineland with a guest speaker to accompany our "Pot Luck Dinner".

If you ever need a ride to the meetings just call any one on the Board and we will get you to and from the meeting. Keep that in mind. We want you to attend. We want you to learn whatms going on in your neighborhood. We want you to meet your neighbors. We want you to enjoy yourself.

This January Taunnie and I traveled Pennsylvania to visit friends and relatives in the Baltimore region, Gettysburg and Pittsburgh. For those who grew up in the northeast you may recall those wintry days when the humidity was 1 percent with very low temperatures. Kinda dries your skin so it feels like leather and itchy. Oh yes, getting zapped each time you touched your car door when getting out. I really like our Florida weather (except for Hurricane season). Taunnie and I had a special treat to meet our newest addition to carry on the Novak name. Our Son Vincent and his wife Faye had a child that they named lJacksonn born on December 27th. I have a photo I would like to share with you of him only hours old. He is really a handsome boy and healthy too!!]Momma and son are doing fine. Unfortunately Taunnie brought back a sneezy wheezy cold donated to her by our granddaughter Emma in Pittsburgh.

I also want to thank our Neighborhood watch for looking in on our house while we were away. You know, you donmt have to be President to ask for an extra watch if you are going to be away for an extended stay. All you have to do is ask any one of the Board Members and they will get word back to the coordinator of TBPOA Neighborhood Watch. We have many special folks who volunteer for this duty q yearlong. We are truly blessed.

I do not want to be winded on this my first message from "THE PRESIDENT'S DOCK" so I will end with a wish for a healthy and peaceful New Year in 2006. I promise you my BEST.

Respectfully,

Charlie Novak
