Neighborhood Notes by Evelyn: Picnics, Picnics, Picnics

The Volunteer Picnic coordinated by Peggy Berrier, Sherrie Hall, and Sheila Martin was a great success. It was a great social, as the food was varied and delicious, the fellowship with neighbors and friends was fabulous, and the turnout was the largest we've ever had. The weather also cooperated. If you missed this event, you missed a great time.

The Memorial Day picnic at the St. Augustine Health & Rehab was another fun event. It was held on the front premises under large shade trees. Residents and families enjoyed the beautiful weather, the cool breeze, the hamburgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, watermelon, etc.

The Scimitars held their yearly picnic at the Shrine Club. It was held indoors so we did not have to fight the ants, flies, and insects that also enjoy picnics. All of the food was made by the ladies of the Shriners, who are all super cooks. Retired Educator friends and WWII Submarine friends (also Shriners) attended the picnic.

CONGRATULATIONS:

June is the ANNIVERSARY month. George & Bobbie Cleveland celebrated their 50th anniversary, and John & Dot Delaney celebrated their 36th anniversary by going on a cruise. Jim & Peggy Berrier will be celebrating Peggy's mother & father's 60th anniversary. Congratulations to all couples in Treasure Beach who had June anniversaries.

June is also RETIREMENT party time. JOHN HUME had a great retirement party at his Salado Road home, and was also honored by the St. Johns County School Board for his twenty-seven (27) years of teaching in our school system. DICK JOSLIN (our Santa Claus on Treasure Beach Road) was also honored by the St. Johns County School Board for his eleven (11.3) years

of driving a school bus. Congratulations to all who retired this month, and who will wonder when they ever had the time to work.......as hobby and volunteer activites keep them busy 24 hours a day!

The summer is also VACATION time, although I don't know why people who live in Paradise (another name for Treasure Beach) need to go away for a vacation. However, Ron & Sherrie Hall had a great time in Hawaii. The Joslins traveled up North to celebrate their great-grandchild's first birthday, and visited other relatives in the Northeast. Cruises are a popular pastime, and Bill Jepson is biking in Colorado! Such energy!

MEETINGS:

The June Treasure Beach meeting was attended by about twenty-five members. President Charlie has lots of social activities lined during the summer months----Boat Tour, Bowling, Beach party, Lunch Bunch. Come join the fun with your neighbors. During the break we enjoyed Napoli's pizza, and other goodies (which had all the calories removed). The winners of the Raffle were Wally Richter ($100), and Evelyn Delaney ($75). The raffle added $381 to our treasury. Thank you for supporting Treasure Beach with our raffles, and activities.

The winners of the Lottery tickets were Jim Berrier, Bill Chalmers, Marion Libby, Taunnie Novak, and Phyllis Abbot. Our next meeting will be in September.

The St. Johns Retired Educators awarded six scholarships to local students. Assistant Superintendent Martha Mickler was the guest speaker. They also honored Anna Wheeler, the 5th grade essay contest winner who won the Unit Award and the District V Award.

Any retired educator is welcome to attend and join our local Unit. Our next meeting is September 22nd. If you are interested, please call Evelyn.

BRAGGING:

Steve and Phyllis Abbott (Majorca Road) are excited about their first grandson, Andrew John Abbott, born on April 3, 2006, weighing in at 7 lbs, 3 oz. He was 19 inches long. His parents are Harold & Mara Abbott, son & dtr-in-law of Steve & Phyllis.

Jim & Peggy Berrier (Rio Royale) recently attended their younger son's U.S. Army Airborne graduation at Ft. Benning, GA. Scott is now stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft.Bragg, NC. Their other son, Aaron, is currently serving with his Jacksonville, Florida based United States Navy Reserve Unit in Kuwait.

Bill & Peggy Chalmers have nineteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. It is difficult keeping up on the whereabouts of the grandchildren as several of them are making their careers in the Air Force. Grandson Jason Chalmers (Air Force) left Illinois in June for Korea. Granddaughter Melissa Chalmers (Air Force) left Maryland in June for Korea. Bill & Dawn Chalmers (Air Force) live in Arizona, and just had a new baby, Jackson, who joins his two brothers. Donald & Katie Chalmers (Air Force) spent a year in Korea, came back to the States in January, and left for Germany in February. They have Cody, and a new son named Joseph.

Shawn Delaney (John IV) left Shaw AFB, SC, in June] to spend a year in Korea. Maybe the Chalmers and Shawn will meet in Korea. Maybe they already know each other, as Shawn keeps running into his friends as he is transferred from Base to Base.

New residents Truett & Maritza Yarbrough have three sons and a daughter. Two of their older boys are serving in the military. Danny is in Oregon serving with the Coast Guard, and David will be going back to Iraq for a third tour of duty with the U.S. Army in August.

We are all PROUD of our sons and grandsons who are in harm's way so that we may remain a free country. Please keep all the servicemen in your prayers for their safe return home.

Treasure Beach is a unique community. The residents are interesting, friendly, retired, still working, owners, renters, etc. We want to know you better, so please keep me informed of any interesting events in your daily lives.

Love & Hugs,

Evelyn,
