St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Impliments On-line Reporting for Low-Level Crimes

Press Release:  http://www.sjso.org/media/On%20Line%20Reporting.pdf

In an effort to both be convenient for our citizens and to help reduce costs to the Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar announced the implementation of “Online Reporting” for select incidents. “The challenge of this endeavor,” Shoar said, “is to maximize efficiencies and effectiveness, and at the same time, not sacrifice public safety or the quality of life our community deserves.”

Sheriff Shoar directed his management team to discover options that will allow for more discretionary patrol time and to give additional flexibility in how deputies are deployed. One of those options was Online Reporting, which allows citizens to file and receive a copy of a report without leaving their home. The types of reports that can be generated online are limited to low level crimes where no evidence or suspect information exists, thus saving thousands of tax dollars each year.

At the present time you will be able to file online reports for lost property, vandalism, thefts of not more than $300, identity theft, vehicle burglaries and harassing phone calls. With over 3,100 reports of these types of calls over the past year we could anticipate a significant savings if some of these cases were reported online, according to Shoar. It is important to note that all online reports will be reviewed and approved by a law enforcement supervisor.

Sheriff Shoar stressed that online reporting is simply an option our citizens may utilize to assist them in  documenting a crime and is NOT mandatory. He added, “As always our deputies will continue to respond and meet with any citizen for any reason when they are requested.”

If you would like to learn more about online reporting, please visit the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office website at www.sjso.org, and click on the logo for online reporting.

February 2011 Newsletter

WOW! I can’t believe how the time is flying. 2011 already! When I was much younger, I thought by this time we’d all be getting back and forth to work like the Jestsons did!! (I hope most of you remember watching the Jetsons’ cartoons.) Think about it…..a lot of space programs we watched as children are a reality today!

A new year is the time to think about ways to enrich our lives. Think of ways you can reduce your stress.

  • Turn off the television
  • Take time to read. Whether you’re reading for pleasure or to learn something, it’s a peaceful time. (I highly recommend the Bible. It has everything; love, sex, murder, adultery, war and redemption.)
  • Be thankful for what you have. It can always get worse.
  • If you have children, spend more quality time with them. They grow too fast.
  • If you’re fortunate enough to still have your parents, spend more time with them. They can be a wealth of information.
  • “Stay in your own lane.” (Quoted by Paula Dean). What does that mean? Not every problem has to become your problem. Learn which ones should involve you and which ones should not. I’m sure we all thought life would get easier as we floated into retirement age. I know I did. Well, I’m learning to become a better driver and “stay in my own lane”.

One day a week watering starts Nov. 7

Read Article on the St. Johns River Water Management Blog

Originally posted Wednesday, November 3, 2010

With the upcoming change on Sunday to Eastern Standard Time comes a change in the days allowed for lawn and landscape irrigation. Between Sunday (Nov. 7) and March 13, 2011, irrigation throughout the region within the St. Johns River Water Management District is limited to no more than one day a week.

Irrigation has been allowed no more than two days a week since 2006. The move to one day a week is part of increased efforts to conserve our water resources and coincides with the reduced need for irrigation during the cooler months that are typically associated with Eastern Standard Time.

Beginning Nov. 7, if your address ends in an odd number, you can water on Saturdays, and if your address ends in an even number, you can water on Sundays. Nonresidential irrigation can occur on Tuesdays. Watering can only occur before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. Some exceptions apply to the rules, and all of the details are on our watering restrictions web page.

Being able to water on a certain day doesn’t mean you have to water. Being aware of rainfall and the reduced water needs of your lawn in the coming months can sometimes eliminate the need for watering much or at all.

So, why are weekend days designated for watering when that’s when many people want to work in their yards? Not everyone has an automatic in-ground irrigation system, and those who use hoses with sprinklers need some weekend time for irrigation. If you want to work in your yard on Saturday morning and your yard is showing signs of needing water and your watering day is Saturday, you may want to water Saturday evening after you complete your yard work.

Why do we limit irrigation? It’s estimated that about half of residential water use goes toward irrigation, and, in many cases, it’s used inefficiently. Freshwater is a finite resource in Florida, and increased conservation will delay the need to implement some expensive alternative water supplies in the future.
